With DDO you really don't need to purchase anything. It helps if you spend like $5.00 just to activate a couple more character slots but otherwise you could theoretically play for free all the way through, it certainly isn't required as there is free content for all play levels. I have never even thought of buying music from any of the games I play. I tend to play most games I like so much that the music is usually playing in my head even when I try to turn it off to get some sleep.
