With patch 6.0.2, they are unlocking all the character names.
In order to keep your, you need to log in to all characters whose names you want to keep.

It appears this only applies to characters that hasn't logged in since the Lich King days, so i'm good at least

Yeah, it is only characters that haven't logged in since 2008, not all character names.
