Kythron the 7th 9am Nightscale’s Lair ...Round 9

Nightscale continues to swim deep keeping a distance from the fighters, Sofija floats unconscious above her in the water. The caster is closer to most members and receives a barrage of attacks. Sofija awakes just in time to finish off the lizardfolk shaman, however that extra time allowed Nightscale to reposition and blast yet another acid breath attack, killing Ni and Sofija. With Sofija's dying breath she whispers "can anyone save me a tooth or claw?". Neela and Mel’ro close in on the dragon who turns to flee down the tunnel heading east. Neela swings and misses but Mel’ro’s Shortsword takes hold tearing into the dragon’s flesh and ending the battle.
The body of Sofija and Nightscale are brought to the island’s shore where a claw is removed for Sofija and the sorting of the Dragon’s horde begins. Of note is a magical Durgeddin the Black made Greataxe, a magic Shield and ring of storing. While the party sorted loot and rested the remaining nooks and corners of the lair were searched.

The trip back to Blasingdell was slow and uneventful, a stretcher was assembled to carry Sofija back to the temple, taking three days to arrive.

Kythorn the 10th Noon

At the Wintervale Mansion Django, Zagri and Dimbel speak with Lord Althon and the Mayor, Sir Miles, whom excuses himself to check on the progress at pit 2. Django recaps our progress with Althon and the discussion of heading to either Mirabar or speaking to Kyler about bringing back Sofija from the grave. Althon suggests Kyler is the best recourse so the Scrying stone is presented and Django successfully attempts to use it. The voice of Kyler imitates from the stone "We received your message and have already taken care of it" Django replies "What do you mean its taken care of?" … the party takes the stone and continues to talk while heading to the Temple where they find a confused female barbarian wondering out of the temple. It seems Sofija has agreed to payment "of ending some evil" in return for being brought back.

With Sofija among us once again Loot is divided and the magic items are decided on. Zagri tells the party he can bring any of them back if they fallen, but only while in the heat of battle so it would be wise to obtain some diamonds for the spell. So the party heads to the Echo Quarry Exchange for coin swapping and diamond purchasing. Then back to lord Althon to see if there are any pressing concerns. He confirms a increase of Dusk League bandits attacking some merchants, Trolls coming up from the south and that the Miners are trying to access some pre existing tunnels under the mines. Most concerning still is the Oni whom just attacked one of the sages. So we searched the outside around the Temple of the Omens finding large prints leading towards the north wall.

Meanwhile at the Stormwind Inn Django and Edu hear running footsteps outside and 2 guards storm in "Im glad you are here, Grendar has sent for you, please head to the garrison.” Arriving at the Garrison is a bustle of activity, guards are strapping on gear and heading north out the gate towards the mines. The half orc Grendar sees Edu and Django and says “there has been an attack at pit number 2, we need your help.” They rendezvous with the rest of the group at the North Gate and take off running to the Mines

We hear metallic clanging sounds down in pit, and a bright flash of fire as we edge closer to the open pit. As we reach the edge we see Dara Whitewood with Milita members and walking up the hill is Talli and V. Bones and blood cover the ground of the mine entry way and Talli looks satisfied, and V is covered in blood. The Miners have tunneled into the empty hollow areas and were attacked by undead, they up a good fight, but atleast 6 of the miners are missing. Althon is having his folks to set perimeter and watch the road and will compensate us for clearing out the tunnels and retrieving the missing. We enter the Mine tunnel walking till all light is gone, Edu lights hill torch revealing a group of humanoid figures surrounding 2 bodies on the floor. Undead stare back at us …initiative

Kythorn the 10th 1:15pm Mine Pit 2

The low ceiling mine tunnel gives us a perfect view of the 4 ghouls devouring two Dwarven miner bodies. One charges towards the party whom are gathered at the mine tunnel, the newcomer Zagri tells Sofija to handle this one and runs towards the other ghouls, as soon as he is out of range of Django’s skeleton he releases a Destroy Undead pulse… but they are stronger than expected. Two of the ghouls at least turn and run away from the Tabaxi cleric towards the mine's exit, but the other two pounce at the isolated figure, paralyzing and tearing at his flesh and fur.

From the west cavern four more ghouls dashtowards the fresh flesh at the entryway. Sofija stands her ground swinging at the undead and Django’s skeletons press forward. One of the fleeing ghouls squeezes past the group to be met with sword and daggers as it runs by. One ghoul devours Dimbel’s Owl, and it poofs it from existence, in response Dimbel casts the first of many fireballs that burst into the darkness of the mine. Edu follows suit with fireballs and Magic Missiles. Sofija take several swings and shrugging off just as many the paralyzing effects that try and take hold of her. However the young cleric has not been as lucky, even with fire erupting around him from the fireball, the ghouls are intent on their meal as their charred bodies smoke and begin eating the fallen party member.

A Ghast makes its way from the west issuing commands to the Ghouls, “kill the soft ones' … 'drag the paralyzed ones to the feeding grounds.” The Ghast's stench is unbearable but Dimbel and Sofija manage to keep their lunch down as the undead begin to drop. Django’s Toll the Dead and the casters finish off the remaining undead as they make their way to their newest companion. The corpse survived the fires but meaty chunks are missing and consumed. Edu suggests "we should look around and take a short rest" and Django asks for an "Invisibility?" to explore the near by area before exiting the mine. Dimbel discusses some logistics of getting Zagri to the temple. However it’s decided to at least have a quick look around before leaving, so Django equipped with his stealthy elven boots and invisibility takes off. To the west he sees a pile of bodies, and to the north the rough area of the mine opens up to a furnished great hall …a Dwarven Library... dwarven runes are carved into wall, but not the traditional carvings of Hammers and Forges but of books and themes of academics. Curiosity gets the best of Dimbel and he walks towards the collapsed entrance without invisibility, hoping nothing stirs within.

Django by now as headed back to where the party gathered around Zagri and heads north through a second collapsed hall. It opens to show more of the old library. A pile of old bones are at the tunnel opening, but oddly beyond that all is to clean and organized for such a old place, all the books have been picked up where they should have been scattered. There is a sign on the wall, the print to small to see from the distance. Django checks for traps as he moves closer to the sign. It’s written in several languages (common) "limit discussions to no more than a whisper in this place of knowledge". Continuing a little deeper into the library he sees what maybe an office, with a counter, more book shelfs and a large volume open with quills laid out. In the mist of it all floats a Dumbledore looking Ghost hovering while a book floats in front of it. It looks up and locks eyes with and invisible Django, wearing a look of confusion…

Kythorn the 10th 5pm Blasingdell.

Evening at the Stormwind Inn...there was much discussion on the high cost of the Raise Dead spell that Moonfog has in her shop. Whether to purchase it, use the scrying stone or speak with Lord Althon. The next day it is decided to reach out to Kyler with the scrying stones to see what the costs will be to bring back Zagri. Kyler states "Raising dead is expensive, you will need to make an agreement or pay"... Edu "how much money?"... Kyler “500g for a diamond and a bit more for the time.” With that the party debates a bit more and heads to see Lord Althon, who is outside of the Wintervale Mansion talking to Sir Miles. Althon is still in armor and looking very ragged, the stress of all the deaths these past couple weeks are a heavy burden for him. He speaks about the risk of using the Raise Dead spell, since there are none in town powerful to cast it safely. Dimbel has Django presents the Durgeddin the Black Greataxe +2, which he eagerly offers 5k gold for.

Sofija shares a bit more about his experience about being brought back and details a bit more on the figure who preformed the spell and the deal that was made. So it is decided to meet with Kyler and moments later outside the Temple of Omens a Blue swirling portal opens up, Kyler and another man comes out of portal. Dimbel bows in greeting and Kyler says “My companion here is Trose Alkari, the fee for the diamond is 500 gold, and for our time you can either agree to assist Sofija in her quest or to give us a small portion of the dwarven tomes for our time." Dimbel hands them the 500g and it is agreed upon that we will help sofija in her quest, so Trose stands over Zagri and begins a lengthy ritual.

Once Zagri is awaken he offers to pay for most of the costs and thanks them all. Django heads to the Shield and Morningstar to sells some old gear and then to the Gorgon and Gremlins to buy the Raise Dead spell for a back up if any other were to fall in battle. Edu buys the Wand of War Casters from Moonfog and the next few days fly by with downtime activities. The next few days fly by as Sofija and Zagri recuperate. The evening of Kythorn the 14th a beat up guard arrives from a convoy that was headed from Luskan to Blasingdell. His caravan was ambushed, less than a day from here on Blackford road intersection by two dozen bandits of humans, half orc, and full orcs. Everyone one of them had the redhanded dusk league emblem on them. A handful of guards separated and scattered, he is the only one that made it here, others may have made it else where. The 2 heavy cargo wagons were owned by one of the high Captains, Ship Kurth. (The most powerful of the captains) it was a shipment for the watch, food stuff and winter goods.

The party asks which is a bigger threat to Althon…the undead coming up from the Mine pit 2 or the bandits. Althon recommends the undead should be dealt with first, because he can send his guards to watch the road. So the next morning the party head to Mine Pit 2 where they find Dara and Bear on the watch

Through the mine to the broken wall of Ironstaff Hold we see the barricades doors that Django had put in place on his last visit. A lumpy rug to the west covers five skeletons, laid out for last rights, mostly dwarves, 1 human/elf a century old. The last rites have been lost to time to determine which god it was for. The group decides to head through the north door, avoiding the east which leads to the library. While un-piling the tables from door a faint sound footsteps can be heard in the distance beyond the door.

Kython 15th 7:30am Ironstaff Hold

The party waits for the footsteps to fade before Sofija stealthily opens the door leading north, which reveals a short hallway. Beyond the hall is a great room, but more immediate is a single door that leads to a small barracks. Many footlockers and small beds are inside along with a scattering of bones. When Sofija and Zagri enter the room all the bones begin to swirl into a large undead skeletal monster and a second smaller one forms from under the one larger bed.

Django shouts out “a Skeleton Juggernaut!” and is impressed to see such a creation. Zagri shouts to Sofija “quickly swing your maul” as he casts a Shield of Faith on her, the bludgeon damage her weapon produces crushes bone extremely effectively. Bear enters the room allowing the casters to move to and from the doorway to cast attacks. The Juggernaut swirls again and a tidal wave of bone punchers and pierces the melee. Dimbel steps into the doorway casting a fireball instantly setting the bedding and wood a flame. The Juggernaut explodes from the heat but quickly reforms its scattered pieces into a dozen individual skeletons. “Don’t be afraid my friends” shouts Zagri as a storm of tiny hammers erupt from the center of the Tabaxi and engulf the surrounding skeletons. With the room filled with Spirit Guardians the skeletons do not get the chance to attack again.

"Is anyone able to control these flames?" as the fireball fires continue to burn the beds and footlockers. Edu and Django quickly take the next couple minutes to save what items they can, allow the party is finds a few precious stones among the wreckage. The far room to the North echos with footsteps and the groans of undead. With Django's superior darkvision he scouts out alone while the party creates a deadly kill box in the hallway awaiting for him to return with prey. Django stealthy enters the room seeing much further than the front line melee had. The great room is full of large columns, alters, pacing undead and piles of bones. Just to the left of the door is a raised platform with a table set out with pottery and a chest of coins. Slowly entering the room Django makes his way to the table ignoring the obvious trap of the coins, but still curious what the covered pot might contain. He lifts the lid to the dish and three ghostly figures appear. They reach out grabbing at him with a necrotic draining life touch. Django reaches for his ring and with a twist he has Misty Stepped back into the hall where the party stands ready for any menacing pursuers… but they do not come. Dimbel curious of what might satisfy or trigger these specters he casts mage hand and places a gold piece within its grasp sending it to the table. He places it into the chest but nothing happens and the specters remain unseen…

Kython 15th 10am Mining Pit Two

After a short rest we return to the Great Hall where we find the specters still gone. The group enters the room and evaluate the undead patrolling the north area of the room. A female elf wearing chainmail, a halfling or young elf in Leather armor and a dwarf in heavy armor... none are equipped with weapons. Django opens up with a Darkness and the party launches attacks on the patrolling guard, no retaliation happen… the dead continue their march.

Bear says "Hello?" and a voice from behind the 4 thrones speak out in hollow, ringing voice "Hello? why are you attacking the Dwarven guard?" Django says "Forgive us, we thought they were dangerous." The voice rebuttals "The librarian didn’t attack? Not all here are a threat”. Introductions are made and we are invited back to the room behind the thrones. Elerath Winterheart is a paladin and is not happy we are here and is hesitant and cryptic with information that he does divulge. He seems to have worked on both sides of what destroyed this hold, he was here before the corruption and more then likely corrupted. He does not plan on leaving nor his few companions, however a woman named Lillith will try and leave, she is locked away in the hold somewhere and to release her we would need keys and find the location of the Ritual Chamber. By now we have worn out our tentative welcome with questions. Everyone except Dimbel, Edu and a chest have left the graffiti filled room to the throne area.

Edu asks where we might find these keys he had spoke of? Elerath begins another one of his tempered retorts when Dimbel asks if he could peek inside the box at his feet. Elerath shoves the chest with his foot towards the gnome "You have guts… surprising for a wizard, but no brains" he lifts his greatsword while Dimbel eyes the box and attacks! Dimbel’s shield repels the first blow but a second swing follows charged with a smite that slams into him. Elerath Winterheart and his three companions attack, even without weapons their fists glow with a necrotic bludgeon impact as they begin punching through Django’s undead and Bear. Sofija has one boxed in Eleraths private chambers while the rest of the party have made their way to the great hall. The casters try to find protection behind Django’s undead army, Bear has been knocked unconscious by the zombie elf child, and Elerath has been frozen in place by a Hold Person…

Kython 15th 10:30 am Ironstaff Hold GreatHall

The battle with Elerath Winterheart and his three companions continued for ten long rounds. At one point near the end only Edu and Django were left standing as the others laid unconscious on the floor. Elerath and the undead Elf loom over the bodies of Zagri and Sofija. Edu shields off attacks as he reaches Sofija and pours a potion of healing down her throat bringing her to consciousness. Elerath commands Edu to get out of the way so he can finish off the prone barbarian. His undead elf rises back up with its undead fortitude awaiting Elerath command. Django uses his readied potion to awaken Zagri and Sofija whom takes up the paladin’s challenge. She rises quickly and with a critical crushing slam of her Maul into Elerath who slams up against wall. Sofija turns smashing the elf to bits while Elerath remains slummed but alive.

Zagri stands and sends a massive healing word to all those collapsed comrades on the floor and those still standing lay into the weakened paladin. Elerath starts to sit up bracing his back on the wall when a symbol of the "all seeing eye" swirls in radiant light and glow of the sacred flame forms for a brief moment then dissolves along with the body. Edu says the mark of Helm, the god of guardians and protectors. "The Vigilant One"

With the party back in Blasingdell they tended to a few errands. Elerath’s greatsword was sold to Lord Althon and a sketch of Durgeddin’s mark was copied into Django's journal for future reference. Edu scribed some spells and Sojija did what she does best... drinking with the local miners. After a long rest the party met with Sister Alonsa whom was researching some information about Ironstaff. She found various documents and books from over a century ago tell of a small Dwarven hold named Ironstaff somewhere in the foothills of the Spine of the World Mountains west of Mirabar. There are some rough maps of the region, but since the closest landmark was Khundrukar, which was small and somewhat isolationist until destroyed, the location is estimated at best, but matches closely to the ruins you have uncovered. The hold was considered somewhat different from other Dwarven holds of the time. It was dedicated to knowledge, multiple faiths, and magic. More than any other Dwarven settlement of the time, and probably even now. It was supposedly open to any non-evil/hostile creature and allowed no prejudice against any that came there seeking knowledge. All references seem to end just over a century ago. Rumored destroyed and collapsed by strange earthquake in the region. The hold was not necessarily "ruled" except most people living there deferred to the family (Ironstaff) who founded the hold. The “council” of Ironstaff family members consisted of 3 brothers & a sister: Gerin, Borzen, Jarro, & Brundolin.

Sister Alonsa also researched the name Lillith, which was is not a totally uncommon name, Alonsa has found references to a dozen other Lilliths in her research (example: Lillith Ardensen owned a tavern in Mirabar about 50 years ago), BUT none stand out EXCEPT Lilith, one of the 5 original “archangels of love,” who were transformed into succubi after rebelling against some ancient god. Lillith is an archdevil, known to reside in Maladomini the 7th layer of Hell, and consort of Baalzebul, Lord of Maladomini.

When the group heads back to the mine the Militia reported seeing large shadowy vaguely-humanoid shapes exit in the night and take off FLYING. The party decides to venture into the Library to open up a couple of the locked doors and check out that suspicious shelf Django had found the day before. Dimbel casts Knock on the first door they come to, which emits a echoing BOOM through the hold and it immediately sets off the Librarian into his red attack mode. Knowing the Librarian is restricted to his domain of books the party runs out of the Library. From outside, Dimbel shows him the symbol of Kelemvor, whom points at Dimbel (or possibly the pendant) in response.

The party proceeds cautiously back to the great hall and to the west to investigates a doorway in the southeast corner near the east platform. The doorway leads into the Library as well where the Librarian immediately appears at the entrance pointing at Dimbel continuously... suddenly Dimbel is lifted off the ground by some unseen force and thrown through the air into the library, where he lands on a table. Dimbel places the box and pendant on the table next to him and the unseen force picks up the wooden box. Django quickly casts Mage Hand and attempts to pull the wooden box back from whatever force is attempting to make off with it and the ghost becomes angered once again.

Kython 16th 8:45a Ironstaff Library

Django continues to pull the box containing the Kelevmor amulet with his mage hand from the library’s grasp. The Librarian continues to rage in his red form and erupts into a horrid form emitting a wave of fear to those whose gaze fell on him. The visage throws Sofija into a rage and she bursts though the rooms threshold grabbing Dimbel and pulling him to the safety of the great hall. A pile of skeletons begin to swirl in a whirlwind of blinding shrapnel obscuring the room. Django and Sofija pushed their way threw as Dimbel’s small gnome form is ejected out. The Librarian hovering the pendant in front of him has become his calmer self and floats the amulet onto a dwarven skeleton on the floor near by. Django asks him if he is “OK” and with a affirmative nod from librarian whom writes a response "You have returned Gerin Ironstaff’s pendant. Elerath took it after he was killed, returning the amulet has cleared my head now that it has been returned to its rightful place.”

With the threat gone new questions for the Librarian are asked. We learn that the amulet was owned by Jarro Ironstaff and is a key to unlocking Lillith’s prison. Django surmises that each of the four Ironstaff rulers had a personal object turned into a key so, to test theory Edu presents Brundolin’s dagger, which the librarian confirms we are on the right track but will need the dagger’s sheath. 4 keys were made in total, Gerin’s flute and Borzen’s spell focus gem as the final two. The Librarian sketches a map of the Northern reaches of the hold and the party decides to find the North exit before returning to Lord Althon with their new information.

Traveling towards the first room north of the great hall starts with the torch flame being blown out. Multiple attempts of restarting the fire fail making magical means the only option, so Django produces dancing lights to mark the way. We proceed up the stairs and before the hall bends we here hollow voices speaking about the mundane topics. Talk of Commander Brundolin’s dagger catches our ear and we find ourselves in the mist of a market full of ghostly spirits.

Kython 16th 10:15a Ironstaff Market

The group begins to gather in the North exit out of the Market when a ghost calls out "Wait! you haven’t bought anything from us yet" referring to the cloth and food vendor. In order to keep the ghosts happy a bolt of cloth and Cormyr salt is purchased. Within the North room some movement in the shadows catches Zagri's eye but as he moves in for a better look nothing can be seen. Django sends in his skeletons and floating lights revealing a large room full of broken racks, stands, debris and two large braziers.

Zagri moves up to the a brazier to see if he could light it, and a figure lurking in the shadows ahead calls out. Django recognizes her as a female drow elf with unnatural wisps flowing off her. Speaking in elvish she (Chalniss of house Hun'lyl) asks how a Drow and his slaves came to be here. Django keeps up the ruse explaining the location of a false exit that we entered. She is very interested in leaving this place and how she became enlightened in a very similar sounding way as Elerath. Chalniss states how Lillith brought all this beauty to the Ironstaff Hold as we look around to the ruined state it has become. She runs off to the shadows to find the exit leaving us limited time before she returns angry.

As we move from room to room we continue to try various forms of fire, but Edu believes he is cursed as the others assure him it is this place and not him. The rest of the large room leads to the collapsed north gate. Buried beneath is a half torso in decorative plate armor crushed underneath. Rubble is rolled off and moved till we find the empty dagger sheath we had been seeking. The next room to the east is the Tavarn where Jarro normally would have been, so we head there finding much less damage compared to the rest of the hold. Dimbel investigates behind bar finding some bottles and a door leading to a small bedroom. A skeleton lays on the bed surrounded by emptied alcohol bottles. No flute is found only a ledger and "Ironstaff Ale" cans.

Zagri watching the corridors hears a whispered drow voice coming from a southern hall..."liar!" in a hissed whisper can be barely heard by django. A call to arms is shouted but the drow doesn’t attack and we gather the group and head back the way we came. As we reach the center of the room Chalness is waiting in the door way to south, "You Lied! Your lights give your location away, but i will find the way out." and runs off to the shadows again. There is a split in wether to follow or continue the exploring of the hold. Django argues "She has not harmed us and anyone trapped here for a 100yrs would want to leave it. Let her be." However Zagri insists "She has been corrupted like Elerath and will be danger to the town and guard outside the mines." So a vote to explore or return to the entrance is held … returning to check on the wellbeing of the guard is decided on.

At the mine Dara, Bear and Guards await, they have seen no one pass since we went in. A request to have a runner to report to Althon is requested and a break down of what has happen within Ironstaff is explained. A short rest and lunch is had with Bear and Dara until we decide to finish exploring the Librarian's Map. We return to the now empty market, the spirits seemed to have have been satisfied and left. The meeting hall to the north is empty and in shambles like the rest of the hold. Other than an intact shortbow nothing of interest is found.

Some time is spent learning about indoor plumbing, first with the bathhouses and then the toilets. The toilets are hidden behind privacy curtains like the bathes were in the room before. Dimbel reveals each one to insure no bodies are missed. The first has nothing out of the ordinary other than the impressive working plumbing system. The sound of water can be heard flowing below. However in the second stall Dimbel steps into some tar on the floor. He pulls out his unlit torch and pokes the substance on the floor. The water sound fades to silence and from the bowl behind rises up a black ooze lashing down as he tries to light his torch with the tar.
